He'd almost reached the top of the hill when he heard their cries: a kind of rhythmic gloopy liquid bubbling noise and a shrill, piercing avian cry quickly followed by a second. He stopped still, crouched and reached for his sword. Listening intently to the new sounds that had joined the constant roar of the wind on the moors and the chirping of insects and rustling of smaller creatures that had now grown silent, alert to the danger. He could hear several of them now, in all directions. He was surrounded.
They weren't even still supposed to be here. He'd sorted out whatever was going on in Ghagarv. The rift had disappeared behind a veil of mist, still there in another realm of existence just behind our own but no longer a threat. He'd heard rumours of monster threats that weren't the usual things that lived in this area. He'd taken commissions to exterminate them so he could go out and confirm his suspicions. Sure enough, there were slimes here - the larger, purple variety - and kobolds that were small but lethal in a pack. They weren't really a threat to a seasoned swordsman like himself - his whirling blades took them out with barely a sound - but he'd left a couple alive to lead him back to their lair.
Sure enough, they'd come out of a portal, nestled in a clump of trees where the forst grew denser. He could just see its arcane glow and hear the hum of its power. The wanderlust and passion for adventure that he had become famous for, whether or not it was a good thing, overcame him. He could probably fit inside the portal, just about, but he would need Dogi's help to get the trees out of the way.
