The Doctor realizes that his new, abrasive personality can be a little taxing for Clara, and for the people they encounter. He never claimed to be an easy man to deal with, though. All of his lives have had days when he's needed to get a little sharper than others might be comfortable with.
But sometimes truths need to be told; and sometimes those truths are hard. It's not always best to pull a punch, in order to make progress in a given situation.
