Buffy stood on the deserted balcony, leaning on the railing and looking down at her friends, mixing with the crowd on the dance floor, happily dancing their troubles away, if just for that night.
She was surrounded by so many people, and yet she’d never felt more alone.
Instinctively, her eyes scanned the crowd, searching for him—her cheap escape from reality. She hated herself for the relentless pull she felt toward him and for the way he made her feel, but she didn’t know how else to dull the hollow ache that gnawed at her insides at every waking moment.
Her chest tightened with anticipation when she felt Spike’s presence behind her; the loud music from below became a dull roar in her ears when she zoned out, caught in a whirlwind of desire and shame.
Buffy gripped the railing and opened her mouth to speak, but the words died in her throat, turning into a muffled moan.
She hated him. She hated herself. And yet, she wouldn’t walk away. The pull between them was a scorching fire that left nothing but ashes in its wake.
Losing herself in him, she stood there, staring out at the oblivious crowd below.
