“Look at this mess!” exclaimed Buffy. “I get that they were eager to get out or… in need of urgent medical attention, but they could have shown some responsibility and offered to help us clean up before bolting out the door.”
“The nerve, huh?” said Dawn, as she started to put away the board games. “I’ll help.”
Buffy smiled, gathering half-eaten bags of chips and other party food. “Thanks.”
They worked in silence for a moment, then Dawn blurted out, “I’m worried about Spike.”
“Why?”
“Didn’t you see his face? It looked like something used him as a punching bag!”

Buffy froze. She was grateful for having her back turned to Dawn so she couldn’t see the reaction to her comment, especially how she’d used the word “something” in relation to who—no, what—had beaten Spike up.
She chuckled nervously, moving random stuff to keep her hands busy. “You know Spike. He probably got into a scuffle just for kicks, nothing to worry about.”
“Those weren’t bruises left by a scuffle! And when I asked him, he deflected by saying he had a run-in with those thugs who were after him about the stupid Siamese.”
“See? Poker debts, typical of Spike.”

“I don’t buy it!” insisted Dawn. “Those were just vampires, Spike would have dusted them in seconds. Buffy, I think he’s in trouble.”
“If he is, he wants us to stay out of it, and we will. Spike can take care of himself, Dawn,” said Buffy, desperate to end that conversation. “Now, please get some scented candles to burn? The air in here got awfully stuffy.”
“You had us throw out all the candles during Willow’s big magic purge, remember? Including the harmless, scented ones,” said Dawn, curtly.
“Well, let’s open the windows, then,” she said, ignoring Dawn’s glaring disappointment.
