Title: Complete
Fandom: X-Men
Characters/Pairings: Gambit/Rogue
Word Count: 500
Rating: PG-13/T
Summary: Rogue may have regrets, but Remy has none.
Rogue wakes to a cold bed and from another unsettling dream of things that could have been, perhaps even should have been, had she been a normal, human woman or even possessed almost any other mutant power than the one with which she'd felt cursed for so very long. It's not a curse though, she knows that now. It can't be a curse for it's led her to the family she has, to the life she has, to the very man with whom she shares this bed every night, if not every morning.
The very man she sees now, leaning against the window and looking out at the early morning sun. It almost feels weird to be waking up every morning at this hour, but it's as though their inner clocks have been changed to a new time along with this new life in Louisiana. It's not nearly as chaotic as their lives were back home... Back home... She muses over those two words for a moment, over the whole concept. For the longest time, she'd stayed on the run from one place to the next, and that happened again several times after she joined the X-Men. She still misses the old school, their first family...
But they weren't her first family either... A shiver runs through her, pushing Rogue from the bed. She covers herself with the sheet, knowing eyes could be looking in at them. There are always eyes that could be looking in at her. She knows this; she learned it a long time ago, from her shapeshifting, cruel mother. From her actual first family.
As she touches Remy, her mind goes back to the dream, to the birth that can never be... "Do you evah regret it?"
"What?" Remy asks, genuinely puzzled. Their life together has grown so wonderful that her question truly takes him by surprise.
"D'you evah regret -- " She can't bring herself to ask if he regrets marrying her, not this time, not with the life they've built together in this place that, in some ways, is still strange. " -- that we can't have kids?" she whispers again, almost fumbling.
"Chere, look out dere." He nods, and she follows his piercing, red-eyed gaze as he wraps his warm arms around her and brings her closer to both him and the window, to look out over the life they've made, the kids they do have and who have no one else in this wicked world but them.
"Remy always been an orphan, chere, but Remy always ha'e a family too. Sometimes, too often really, Remy still feel alone in dat family. But not here. Not wit' dese kids we got. Not wit' you." He squeezes her, pulling her closer still.
"I don' mind dat you can't have kids, mon amour, an' who knows? Maybe wit' dis new control, you can, but it don' matter none. I got everythin' I could e'er want, right here, wit' you." He kisses her, and she feels complete again.
