Title: Fond Memories
Fandom: X-Men
Characters/Pairings: Charles/Erik, Jean(/Scott)
Word Count: 400
Rating: PG/K+
Summary: Things have changed a great deal since Charles' first gift, yet many things still remain the same.

"Why red?" Erik asks one morning, surveying Charles with a piqued eyebrow.

Charles shrugs. "As you know, this was one of the first gifts I ever received from my students. My original five went in together on our first Christmas. Warren paid for it, of course. This is top of the line cashmere -- "

"I am aware," he said, but refrained from commenting that he knew very well Charles owned nothing else of the sort beyond this singular garment.

"Scott actually bought it, and I can only surmise he had the color red in mind -- "

"Ah, yes," Erik smiled thinly, "for the dear Jean Grey."

"You called, Professor?"

"No, my dear," Charles said greeting the aging woman whose beautiful, red hair had become penetrated with shades of gray. "I was only reflecting with Erik here on this robe. Do you remember it?" he asked with a smile.

"I do. We wanted to get you the top of the line, so Hank researched until we were certain of the brand -- "

"And then Warren insisted on paying for it." He did not comment on how little funds of their own the others had had during those early days.

"And Scott bought it," Jean said, smiling in fond remembrance, "and you've worn it every Winter since, including that first Christmas despite that uncanny heat wave we'd been experiencing."

Charles had found the pyrotechnic mutant responsible, but it had been one of the missions he had completed solo. He'd tried so hard, in those early days, not to bring the children down with the darker aspects of their mission, including the fact that some mutants never survived beyond the original igniting of their powers.

"Bobby made it snow that Christmas -- "

"Yes, he did." Smiling, Charles nodded in acceptance. Erik, he knew, had sensed the change in his demeanor but said nothing.

"Breakfast is almost ready, Professor."

"Excellent. Thank you, my dear. We shall be in in a moment."

"What aren't you telling us, Charles?" Erik asked quietly the moment Jean left.

Charles shook his head. "I was only reflecting," he said, "how far we've all come since."

Erik knew there was more to the story, but he let it go. He had learned long ago that some truths simply were not worth drawing out of his beloved. Instead, he allowed him to guide him to another breakfast with his family. How things had changed indeed!
