Spike opened the crypt door, frowning when he found Buffy standing outside.
“You’re knocking now?”
“I needed to make sure you were alone. And decent.”
He arched his eyebrow. “What the hell do you think I’m doing in here?”
“Besides getting frisky with creepy robots? I’ve honestly got no clue,” she quipped.
Spike sighed. “Right. I guess you need something, then?”
“A safe place,” said Buffy, tugging Dawn forth so Spike could see her too.
He opened the door wider and Buffy nudged Dawn inside. “So, Her Unhinged Hell-Bitch again?” he asked.
“Yes,” she confirmed. “Can we speak outside, please?”
“Why can’t I listen?” asked Dawn. “This is about me too!”
“It isn’t, I promise,” said Buffy. “It’ll be just a minute, okay? Just sit somewhere and don’t touch anything.”
“I don’t have cooties,” protested Spike.
Buffy tugged him outside, closing the door. “Good for you.”
“A’right, speak. What is it?”
She crossed her arms. “Well, obviously you don’t cope well with rejection, and I don’t want there to be any… confusion, you know? After—”
“Your pity kiss?” he scoffed. “Relax, Slayer. I ain’t planning our wedding yet.”
Buffy nodded. “Glory is after Tara and I can’t leave Dawn alone.”
“Go help your friend, then,” he said. “There are tunnels and caverns accessible through the crypt’s lower level. We’ll be hiding there.”
“I won’t be gone long,” she said, starting to walk away.
“Don’t fret. The tunnels are safe, but on the off chance that something goes wrong, I’m ready to lay down my unlife for the Little Bit. No strings attached.”
“I know. Why?”
He snorted bitterly. “’Cause I’m love’s bitch, remember? I’ve always been. So I’ll swallow my wounded pride and do whatever you ask of me. I hate to see you suffer.”
She smiled gratefully. “Thank you.”

Yeah. I believe we owe that to James in great part. Had anyone else gotten the part, the original three-episode arc would have been a reality. He made Spike the iconic character that he still is today. Though I feel awful every time I remember how much he suffered from the constant bleaching of his hair... 😭 It's a wonder that he didn’t suffer worse consequences, unless he did and we just don’t know.
Actually I wrote and published this just hours before hearing about it. And then I went on to start writing the last chapter of my WIP Enchanted Dawn... it's all so unreal. </3
