Summary: A day in the future comes when Buffy's no longer ashamed.

She knows, the moment the clerk starts staring at her, exactly at which he is gawking. Heat begins to creep into her cheeks, as it always has when a stranger or, even more so, a friend has noticed bitemarks on her throat. It's not as though this were earned in battle. The recent marks on her body -- all of them, both visible and not -- come from a very heated night of passion.

A night of passion shared with her husband, Buffy thinks, forcing down her embarrassment. She's not still in high school, or a drop-out from college. She is a grown woman, who successfully raised her own kid sister and has been very happily married for a few years now. She has been with the same man, even if a Vampire, for several years. He makes her happy, and has ever since she let him. And this pimply-faced kid thinks he has the right to gawk at a sign left behind by their loving. He should be so lucky as to have great sex with someone who cares so deeply for him!

And she has come to care for her husband too, of course, or she never would have married him. She sizes the kid up as he struggles with her change. "Five dollars and thirty-two cents," Buffy remarks, watching him. He must be what? Fifteen, sixteen years old? If somebody had told her then that she would be standing here now, in some poduck town well outside of Cali but very happily married to Spike of all people, she would have thought them insane and might have even cussed them out like Faith! But she is happy with Spike, and they'll soon be celebrating their tenth anniversary. So soon in fact that that's the reason she's bought the onions, dough, and seasonings currently in her shopping bags.

The kid stammers as he turns back to her. "H-Here's your change, ma'am." He's biting back a grin, biting back a laugh, Buffy knows. She takes her change, shoves it in her pocket, and grabs her bags. But then she hesitates.

She looks up at the kid, whose teeth are now biting his lip. His face is turning as red as his hair as he struggles to keep from laughing in front of the customers. She glowers at him and holds up her hand, turning her hand so that the store's bright lights shine on her gold wedding ring. "Married," she states with intensity. "You just wish you had someone like we do."

She stalks off, feeling his eyes on her and telling herself she doesn't care. She's not going to hide who she is anymore, or her love for her husband of which those bitemarks are a clear sign. She's not going to hide behind scarfs, turtlenecks, or anything else. She's married, she's in love, and she's damn proud of it and of him.

Reaching the car, she calls him. "I love you."
