Title: Too Old
Fandom: Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Characters/Pairings: Salem, Zelda/Zelly
Word Count: 500
Rating: G/K
Summary: Too old indeed!

Zelda glanced at Salem as she came into her bedroom, not remembering that this same room had once belonged to her niece, who now served as her mother. Salem remembered all of that and so much more, more than Sabrina or Zelda, or Zelly as she was now often called, would ever remember. But right now, he was content to ignore the world and snooze in a puddle of warm sunshine.

Zelly tossed her bookbag onto the same cabinet Sabrina had once used, and her aunts had used her before her, and their mother before them. She flopped down on the bed, kicked off her sneakers, something Zelda would have never worn before, and looked over to the black tom curled in a kitty loaf position. "It must be so easy being a cat!"

Ah, if only had a penny for every time one of the Spellman women had said those very words to him! He'd still be trapped as a cat, powerless to help where he truly wanted, but he'd be a rich cat! There were so many things he could say in response, all of which he had said to Zelly both in this form and her older life and so many others. But none of them ever mattered. No one understood who he was, what he had been, or even a meager fraction of all he had endured. All he had endured that was always for naught. Salem allowed the tip of his tail to tap the cushion beneath him, but did not deign to speak or even open his eyes.

He heard Zelly as she stood and walked across the room. She plopped down beside him instead, but he still did not open his eyes or look at her. There was no point, no point in any of these, least of all in wasting words and energy that he no longer felt these days.

"Mom says you're getting old."

His eyebrow itched to pique, but he didn't give it away. He'd make sure to remind Sabrina the next time she left a gray hair in her hairbrush, or thought she'd thrown it away in the trash can. He was old, was he?! Hmph! He supposed it beat the alternative, but there was so much more he wanted to do in this life! So much more he had come so close to doing, before Hilda's betrayal and Drell's... well, being Drell!

"I wish I was a cat."

No, you don't, he almost said, but again held his tongue. There was just no point in arguing with youth. When Zelly began to pet him, however, he did begin to purr. The sound resonated in the room, and he could tell it warmed her troubled heart. To think that a girl who had once been a woman trying to save the world with her science, not her magic, would find the meager troubles of teenagerhood worrisome again! She wasn't the same at all. She was the one too old!
