She stood at the side of the crater, a part of her, deep inside, aching to throw herself down. She'd surely meet her death again there, and maybe the third time would stick. Her gift was death. She shivered in the early morning, cool air as her own words echoed inside her mind.

Nobody was here. Nobody knew where she had gone. Nobody understood how much she craved the freedom her death would grant her -- nobody but the one who had given his life to save hers. It would be kinder, perhaps, to think that Spike had sacrificed himself to save the world, but then, who was she kidding? She had kidded herself for far too long as it was.

Spike was the one to whom she should have given her heart. She had gone so freely to Angel, and he had hurt her time and again, even when ensouled. Spike had also fought for his soul, and here in the early morning moments, along by his provinicial grave, she had to admit that counted for something. It counted for a lot.

He'd also fought for her, for Dawn, and for Joyce before he'd ever gotten his soul. He'd befriended her mom while still a bloodthirsty Vampire and risked everything to protect her little sister, who wasn't even truly her flesh. He had given everything for her, and now he was gone.

Angelus and the First had both taunted her with the fact that she would live and die alone, that nobody would accompany her in the end, that a Slayer's path was always meant to be survived alone. Spike had stood beside her to the very end; as long as she'd allowed him, he'd been there for her, and for her family. He'd even risked everything to save the world long before he'd turned good or fallen in love with her.

And he had loved her. She could admit that now, now that it did no good, now that he was gone and she no longer feared the impact of allowing him into her heart. She'd watched many where the heroine was warned that loving nobody might protect her heart but she'd regret it more if she never loved. Buffy understood every one of them now, but it was too late. Long too late.

He had sacrificed himself for her -- she couldn't jump now and make that sacrifice for naught. Besides, she had Dawn to think of and a whole bunch of others, more lives than for which she'd ever wanted to feel responsible. She was from alone, and they were all waiting for her. Yet as Buffy turned to meet the rising sun, and a day caring for others and fighting for their survival, she had never felt more alone or colder.

She walked away, into the sunlight, but paused to look back again at his grave. "I miss you, and I did love you." She could admit that now, now that it was too late.

This is so sad, and so touching at the same time.
