Watts arrived at the scene with Crabtree, who was outlining a new idea he wanted to turn into a book with enthusiasm. As they strolled across the campus, George suddenly stopped sharing his thoughts. “Oh! I nearly forgot —how are things going with Grayson?”

Watts frowned at the unexpected question but he wasn’t surprised. Of course Crabtree would keep track of his connection with the guard; that first case on campus had clearly been something else, his colleague a witness of their undeniable chemistry.

“He’s a good friend,” Watts replied. A smile softened his face. “And I’m happy. Very much so.”


They soon arrived beneath a sprawling tree, where Grayson was standing watch over something hidden under a cloth.

“I thought you’d know how to handle it better than me,” Joseph said as he pointed to the hidden item. “Found it on my noon round and called you stray away.”

“Okay.” Watts knelt beside the cloth and carefully lifted it, revealing a revolver. Sliding a hand into his jacket, he reached for his notebook only to find it was missing.

“Here,” Joseph placed a steady hand on his shoulder, handing him the notebook. “You forgot it at home this morning.”
