Title: Wherever You Go
Fandom: The Magnificent Seven
Characters/Pairings: Nettie, JD/Casey, Vin, Josiah
Word Count: 500
Rating: G/K
Summary: Wherever you go, there they are.
Author's Note: This kind of trailed off in its own directon. Doesn't seem quite finished, but I'm out of room. :) My apologies! ;) But who knows? Maybe we'll see it come again at some point!
"SHE WON'T LISTEN TO REASON!" Casey shouted, slamming down her drink and stomping out the door. JD, shaking his head, mutely followed behind her, stopping barely in time to keep from being hit in the nose with the slamming door. This wasn't the first time they'd had this argument with Nettie, but the town was drying up. Maybe it was time they all started thinking about greener pastures. Besides, he knew his lady didn't want to stay in Four Corners for the rest of her life. She never had, but Nettie seemed as determined as ever to refuse to move, no matter what they offered her.
Vin calmly sipped his lemonade while most of the guys seemed to busy themselves with tasks that suddenly required their attention. Only he and Josiah stayed in the kitchen with Nettie, who they both had come to realize, indeed, was not going to be moved. "I've said it before, an' I'll say it again. I ain't movin'. Ain't nothing on God's green Earth can make me." She folded her arms determinedly and rocked back in her chair, despite the fact that she'd reduced the rocking chair Vin had made her some years ago to kindling in a matter of scant minutes after having received it.
Vin pursed his lips, but stopped himself from indulging in the whistle that almost emitted. The woman was stubborn all right, but then, he'd known plenty of elders who'd refused to move from their homelands. Still, even the natives had known to move when the buffalo were moving on or dying out. "Nettie, maybe it won't hurt fer a little change o' scenery, jest fer a little while, jest enough to get th' kids settled."
"They can settle in just fine!" she snapped, folding her arms before her. Her wrinkled mouth was not unlike a sharp and angry beak at times like now, but Vin focused on the matter at hand.
"Casey's tryin' to start a new life. They're gonna want younguns, you know, an' they're both gonna make fine parents."
"You're right," she said, still rocking. "They will, and they can do so right here, right on this lot of land where my great great grandparents were born!"
Vin stifled a sigh himself. "But maybe they want better'n fer their younguns."
"Then maybe they don't need me fer a granny!"
Josiah's blue-eyed gaze flicked up from where he was whittling. "You'd be a great great aunt, in their case."
"I'd be a great great granny, Preacher. I don't care who says it."
"But, Nettie, can't you see how this land affects Casey? 'Sides that, this is where your folks lived an' died. You don't think she might wanna look more on life fer a while? What's got you holdin' here, really? Th' lot o' us, we're a family. Your ancestors -- "
"Preacher, ain't you taught this boy nothin' about th' dead?"
"Our ancestors travel with us," Vin nearly snapped. "No matter where we go, they'll come with us too."
