Summary: Buffy's mom is getting ready for a special night. It's definitely not what Buffy thinks.

"Mom," Buffy asked doubtfully, looking around at their living room, "what are you doing?"

"It's Passions night," Joyce replied with a smooth and calm smile.

"I know that," Buffy said. "Vampires, ghosts, romance." Honestly, it sounded more like a night in her life than just the current top-ranking TV series. She waved a hand around at the candles Joyce had lit and the curtains she'd pulled tightly shut. She was pretty certain she'd not seen one of those candelabras since her grandmother had been alive. "You're setting the vibe all right, but isn't this going a bit overboard? You're not planning a seance while I'm gone, are you?"

"And what if I am, young lady?" Joyce asked, her features lifting in a genuine smile. "I'm an adult woman capable of making my own decisions."

Buffy raised an eyebrow at her mom and took another long look at Joyce and the short dress she was wearing. It was simple and black, but she supposed a man her mother's age -- such as Giles maybe -- could possibly describe it as her little, black number. "You're grown, yeah, but if you're having a seance, that is kinda my business. I am the Slayer, remember? Slayer coma the."

"Of course, I remember, honey." Buffy felt a twinge of guilt as Joyce reached a hand up and maternally combed her fingers through Buffy's curls. "I worry about you every night, but I can actually forget one night a week that my daughter is out there facing evil, blood-sucking Vampires every night of her life. One night a week, I can relax, wine, and dine with my favorite show and maybe a friend or two." Joyce gave her a pleading look as she dropped her hand back to her side. "That isn't too much to ask, is it?"

"Of course not, Mom," Buffy said, stifling a sigh. She started to turn for the door, but then turned back around, still eyeing warily. "It's not Giles, is it?" she questioned. "Because that's my Watcher and that could make my life -- Well, no matter what it could do to my life, it's still kind of icky, okay?"

"It's not Mister Giles, sweetheart."

"And you're being safe?"

"Completely."

"Okay. I'm sorry. I'm just -- You're my mom. I can protect the whole town. I can save the world time and again. But if anything ever happened to you -- "

"I'm staying safe, Buffy, I promise. Now if you don't go, the world might end -- " Joyce smiled at her.

"I know; I know. I'm going," Buffy grumbled. She kissed her mother's cheek, then dipped, leaving Joyce to lock the door behind her and turn out the lights. She flicked the television on and had just enough time to withdraw one friend in its tall, bottle form from the fridge before a soft knock sounded at the back door.

She hurried to answer. "Hi, Spike." She knew he'd never look at her, but an old woman, even the Slayer's mother, could dream, right?
