Title: Bags in the Desert
Fandom: The Magnificent Seven
Characters/Pairings: Ezra, Nathan, Maude, Ensemble
Word Count: 500
Rating: PG/K+
Summary: It's never simple with his mother.

He was tired, covered with sweat, dust, and dirt from the last several days' journey into the desert to find and retrieve what the entire town felt was precious cargo. His genuine concern had not been so much for Missus Travis as it had been for his own dear mother, but right now, Ezra's teeth ground together in the noon-day sun as he listened to her prattle. Had he honestly thought anything would change if he rescued her from what certainly would have been death?

Honestly, it was a wonder they had not already blown his mother away with that incessant mouth of hers! The woman had the undeniable habit of nagging on until she could make the simplest of wounds sound dirty, dreadful, and utterly painful. His fingers balled into fists.

Vin tisked softly while Josiah stepped closer to Maude. "Now, dearest Maude," he attempted to console.

Ezra bit back a very rude sound indeed. He wasn't quite certain if it would have emitted from him as a sharp laugh or an actual bark at this point as he glowered at his mother through the sweat and blood marring his vision.

"I'm sure we'll find your bag -- "

"You see you don't understand, darling. That bag o' mine contains what these varmints were really after. It's the rarest jewels, far more rare than anythin' y'all would have in y'all's little bank back in Four Corners -- "

Ezra was not even aware he was speaking until the sound of his own thinly drawled-out words finally demanded his own attention. "Mothah, th' money is not what mattahs -- "

Maude's dyed-blonde head jerked up, her eyes widening in shock. "Mah dear boy, you certainly have been employed with these people far too long!" She clutched at her chest.

His eyes narrowed, fury burning within him, but then he felt a gentle hand on his satin sleeve. He looked into the solemn, brown eyes of none other than the healer with whom he'd quarreled so many times previously. "Chris, JD, and the Judge got the robbers pretty well under hand. How 'bout we take a look at that arm o' yours, Ezra?"

"It was a mere graze -- " he said, but then stopped himself as realization again dawned. Nathan was giving him a subtle way to bow out of the encounter with his mother as Josiah was all but literally trying to pull her in the opposite direction.

"Is this your bag, Missus Standish?" he heard Vin ask and gratefully turned away.

Gathering what little dignity he could still muster, Ezra walked away with his friend, his mother's final words ringing in his ears. "It's certainly not been long enough," he murmured.

Nathan's grin, tooth-filled, white, and shiny in the blistering sun, further surprised him. "You can say that again, friend. You had it rough growin' up."

"Not nearly as much as you," he admitted, and did not hesitate to drink from the canteen Nathan offered him. Thank God for these people, six of them at least!
