In the dead of night, the Viper’s front lights sent eerie shadows down on the ruins of Sunnydale.
Spike had left the car running idle at the edge of the crater and was smoking a cigarette, looking down at the apocalyptic abyss of rubble, rocks, and dirt. He’d heard tales about the fall of Sunnydale—which he’d brought about while sunshine consumed him to the bone—but he had to see it for himself.
“It’s dirty work, but someone had to do it,” he muttered absently, reaching in his pocket for the boat ticket to Europe he’d purchased before leaving L.A.
His determination wavered.
Maybe Buffy would be happy to know that he didn’t fit into an ashtray, but suddenly the idea of showing up unannounced at her doorstep was starting to sound more like an ambush or something.
Three months had passed since the battle at the Hellmouth. Maybe she had moved on—she had the bloody right to—and was already building a new life, one where he didn’t fit. Wouldn’t it be selfish of him to just drop in the middle of that?
Groaning, he crumpled his ticket and tossed it into the crater. Perhaps it was for the best.
