Buffy stood in front of her mirror, staring at the hideous work uniform she’d just slipped on.
The bright orange pants and orange-striped shirt weren’t even the worst part of it. The worst part was the cap that she was holding in her hands, which was also orange and had the face of a plush cow sewed on the front. A cow!
She fought the urge to cringe when she finally put it on. Okay. If she had to dress daily like a fool in order to keep a roof on Dawn’s head, she’d suck it up and do that.
Now all that was left to do was walk out of her room and out of her house looking like that.
She shouldn’t feel embarrassed, right? She was a worker, heading to her workplace to start her first shift. The first of many. Cooking and serving greasy burgers in her bright orange uniform, flashing bright fake smiles to endless lines of burger-addicted customers. For the rest of her life—one that she wasn’t supposed to be living anymore. Maybe at the end of her shifts she could crawl under the tables and cry while sweeping up the crumbs.
Would anyone notice?
