After deciding that lying restlessly in her bed wasn’t going to do her any good, Buffy decided to pay a visit to Spike. They hadn’t talked after her unpleasant encounter with the shady Shadow Men or since she’d publicly called him a wuss.
She had been harsh to everyone else too, maybe going way out of line, but she couldn’t let The First get the upper hand with its vicious mind games. A girl had been led to take her own life after The First had spent days posing as another girl, “living” among them. Undermining their sense of safety.

They needed to be stronger, but what was the right thing to do? She didn’t know anymore. As soon as she reached the basement, Spike snorted. “The Slayer. Have you made up your mind about which version of Spike you prefer?” he asked. “Might not enjoy the killing like I used to, but I could make an exception for you if you’ve still got that death wish. All you have to do is piss me off badly enough; one of your many talents.”
“You got your coat,” she observed, deflecting.
“Still got my soul, too. A permanent deal, I’m afraid.”

“Well, that’s useless if it makes you weaker,” she spat.
Spike winced. “Useless?”
She squared her shoulders. “Sorry if that sounds unfair, but I can’t keep walking on eggshells around everyone, especially you,” said Buffy, her voice starting to quiver. “I need someone who’s strong enough to face what’s coming. Someone other than me.”
“You’re scared,” he observed.
“Yes,” she admitted. “And I can’t let it show when everyone’s counting on me to be strong. But I’m just throwing wild guess after wild guess. It’s not enough.”
“Why? What did the portal show you?”
“Ubervamps. A whole army of them.”
