Summary: It's the morning after...

She came back to consciousness in a golden, warm pool of sunlight. She was not alone in her bed, Emma knew instinctively, and then, with the sweet, enticing aroma of tropical flora reaching in to her from beyond her open window, the silken, white curtains billowing lazily in the breeze, she remembered. They'd gotten away from it all last night, had a little too much to drink and escaped to an island resort.

Her memories were still returning, and for a moment, she thought it was Scott who lay in the bed beside her. The moment she reached out and touched the man's skin, she knew it was not Scott. She had come to know his touch, over the years they'd been together, almost as well as she knew the feel of her own skin. The skin was smooth, far smoother than Scott's or Sean's. She smirked. Now there were dreams long put away!

Only, evidently, not as well buried as she'd thought. With everything that had happened since Krakoa, Emma no longer knew if Sean was alive or dead at this point. The very woman about him she'd once tried to warn him had ended up flaying him and wearing his skin as a disguise, but this new Sean... He seemed to have hardly any memories of their time guiding Generation X. He seemed to have hardly any memories of her, other than whatever reasons he had to neither like nor trust her.

Emma squirmed. Perhaps it was for the best. Scott was back with Jean now, only more mature and a better leader for the X-Men than he would ever been while being her lovesick puppet. She hoped Sean was all right, and that he finally had peace wherever he was. As for the man beside her --

"I'm here." The murmur surprised Emma. Her blue eyes snapped open in full alert even as her husband's fingers entwined with hers. Theirs had been a marriage not even of convenience but of necessity, not unlike the matrimonial arrangements of Kings and Queens in the olden times that had been made for the betterment of their people. Emma found her smeared, blue lips rising in a smile as she gazed over at Tony, his reddened baby blues gazing back at her. No, their choice to wed had not been at all unlike their people's.

Ororo and T'Challa had tried, but their beliefs had been far too different and T'Challa's priorities would always be his own tribe. At least, with her husband, their choices and desires tended to coincide. She didn't need to ask him what his gentle reminder meant. They were both very accustomed to people abandnoning them when they could no longer serve their needs. Oh, when the money, power, and influence flowered, everybody wanted a piece, but when you were down on hard times...

When she had been on hard times, Tony had been there, and he was still right here beside her. She smiled and kissed him.
