Spike heard what he thought was the sound of his crypt door creaking open, footfalls approaching, something being slipped out of his hand, and then he felt someone grab him by the lapels and roll him over. Was he on the floor? In his drunken haze, his usually heightened senses were all muffled and dulled.
Freezing cold water was splashed abruptly on his face, jerking him back to reality. He blinked his heavy eyes open to see the blurry image of twin brunettes towering over him, their arms folded.
“Is this how you’re planning to spend the rest of eternity?”
Dawn sounded deeply disappointed. “Drinking yourself into a permanent state of stupor?”
“You shouldn’t be here,” groaned Spike, trying to sit up while everything around him swayed.
“I can’t be with the Scoobies,” she said, sitting next to him. “They try to act nice but I know they’re blaming me.”
“Bunch of berk’s what they are.”
“Are you still my friend?” asked Dawn, her eyes welling up. “I’ve got nobody left.”
Buffy’s words sounded again in Spike’s head, giving him a pang of guilt. “I’m counting on you… to protect her.”
He caressed her head. “Course. I’ve got you, Nibblet.”

Date: 2024-01-30 11:40 pm (UTC)I admit... I kinda thought it would be Buffy going for a wild ride at first, but this ended up even better! It also really fills in how Spike was able to get pass his grief enough to pull himself together for Lil' Bit.

It's definitely one of my many headcanons for the summer between s5 and S6.
