The woman stood looking down at her newborn child. “Do you like him?”
The baby’s delicate eyelids opened, his eyes shining red like flame. “Yessss,” a voice hissed. “Your firstborn child, so delicate and sweet! I will protect him as he grows and have tender food to eat.”
She did not flinch at the heat radiating from the small body. “You remember our bargain.”
The baby’s chest shook with terrible crackling laughter. “You will be tsarina as long as you live! And your son will be tsar after his father.”
The fiery light faded, and the baby began to wail.
