Dawn stared at her half-written essay, tapping the pen on the coffee table, evidently distracted.
Spike lowered the book he was reading, slouched on the couch, and glared at her. “Knock that off and finish your summer assignment.”
She looked up abruptly, appearing confused. “What?”
“The pen tapping. Bloody annoying.”
She chuckled. “Sorry. I was… thinking.”
“You could think in a less noisy fashion,” he grumbled, returning the attention to his book.
Dawn chewed her lips, fidgeting nervously with her pen. “I think they’re up to something and hiding it from me,” she blurted out.
“Who now?” he asked flatly.

“Willow and Xander!” she exclaimed. “I got up last night to get some water and they were talking in the kitchen, all hush-hush. They got nervous when they saw me.”
Spike sighed. “Maybe they’re having an affair. They had a thing for each other before Red realized she fancies girls.”
“No, listen!” she said, sitting next to him. “I heard her say ‘if the pros offset the cons, why not’ to which Xander replied ‘because it’s dangerous,’ and then he got all panicky ’cause he saw me.”
“I don’t care what those idiots are up to, okay? Finish your assignment.”

“But Xander said it might be dangerous! Aren’t you worried?” she insisted.
“As long as it’s not dangerous for you, then no.”
Dawn snatched the book from his hands and threw it on the table. “I think it might be something big. We should investigate.”
“I don’t think so, Watson,” he said, retrieving the book.
“Uh, excuse me? If anything, I’m Sherlock.”
“No, you’re an annoying little brat who’s trying to find excuses to ditch her homework,” he hissed.
“Fine. But you’ll be sorry when they do something stupid and it turns out I was right,” she spat, walking away.
