Patrol had been a bust.
Buffy was about to call it a night when she spotted someone crouching behind a nearby tombstone.
Shaking her head, she reached her hand behind it and came up with a handful of a loose-skinned demon.
“I know you,” she commented, releasing him.
“Clem,” he muttered shyly. “We met at a poker table.”
Buffy sighed. “Right. Are you out hunting for stray kittens?”
“No, I—I went to see my pal, Spike. I’m worried about him.”
“What is he up to, now?” she asked, hands on hips.
Clem chuckled nervously. “Nothing! But he’s in bad shape.”
Buffy hugged herself. “Bad shape?”
“Someone beat him to a bloody pulp the other day, and ditched him in an alley,” said Clem, shaking his head. “He was unconscious when I found him!”
“Uh-huh,” mumbled Buffy, shifting uncomfortably on her feet.
“A gang of muggers ambushed him, and he couldn’t defend himself! Because of the chip,” he whispered.
She smiled forcefully. “Yeah.”
“I know we’re all monsters to you, but so are those people. And unlike Spike they have a soul. What’s their excuse? Anyway, gotta go. Nice seeing you!”
He walked away, leaving Buffy frozen still, overwhelmed with guilt.
