"I want her broom," Melinda said thoughtfully.
"Why her broom?" Wyatt asked, making a face, but his brother almost smiled in understanding. Almost for none of them felt like smiling. Their mother's death had been inevitable, as all older people's were, but their hearts all still ached for her. She was the last of the Charmed Ones. What were they to do without her?
"A broom is a very important Witch's tool, Wyatt. You know that," Melinda said, with a bit of superiority to her voice.
She started to sweep, but her aunt's hands caught the handle of the broom. "Then let me show you how it's done right," Billie said gently. "We always want to sweep from East to West," she explained, "following the path of the sun and the moon to ward off evil, not invite it."
Wyatt frowned. "You do actually realize that it's our planet that's moving, not the sun?"
"Of course she does, Wyatt," Chris spoke. "Stop being such a tight ass!"
Melinda actually giggled, which made her brothers finally smile.
"It's not what our ancestors believed." Looking back to Melinda, she wrapped her arms around the younger woman and moved with her, sweeping in the path the moon took. "You also want to make sure you never leave it propped in a corner for too long, especially if you're working."
"Did you learn that from the ancestors too?"
"No. From experience."
"How?"
"You leave it in the corner at your momma's restaurant, and you'll find out quickly."
"What are we going to do with the restaurant?"
"We're not getting rid of it," Billie answered quickly. The children were going to be just fine. She did have a lot to teach them, but there were also plenty to keep the family line, and restaurant, going.
The End
