Title: Not To Waste
Fandom: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Characters/Pairings: Donatello, Splinter
Word Count: 500
Rating: G/K
Summary: Their Sensei has taught them many things, including not to waste an opportunity.
Donatello smiled to himself as he watched his brothers flipping through the quiet streets. It had not been that very long ago that such a blackout as that which now sprawled across New York would have meant a crime spree, but the people knew that not only were they protected but that the shops that might have otherwise been easy targets for certain ones amongst them were also kept safe underneath their security. The Foot were still recovering from their last brawl, and that left the city streets open and easy prey for the Turtles themselves.
Of course, none of them would ever steal anything. Their Sensei had taught them so well that they even hesitated in taking something when it was needed to fight to save the city, and when they did, they always returned the item, no matter what shape it was in, with a thank you note and as much of a payment as they could manage. Despite constantly risking life, limb, and sometimes their very souls, there were still far too many people who feared giant, walking, talking turtles. Donatello sighed as he considered how kind they were to the citizens but how mean they still so often were to them, but then, still watching his brothers, he couldn't help but to smile.
He almost jumped when he suddenly became aware of a presence beside him, also watching his brothers. Mikey was out in the lead, teasing the other two who could not seem to catch him. He was irritating Raphael, but Leo was, usual, taking it all in stride. "No luck, my son?" Splinter asked from beside Donatello, his long, wiry tail swishing in the cool night air.
Donatello was almost taken aback. "Master Splinter! Sensei! You actually came up?!" The old rat, who had taught them everything they knew not just about honor and ethics but ninjitsu and many other things as well, rarely ventured above ground. He had been right to teach them to fear allowing the humans to see their true selves for although they had managed to make a few genuine friends over the years, most people still screamed and fled from them when they saw them outside of their various costumes.
Donatello idly thumped his wrench. "I thought I might let it go for a while."
"Some things, my son, do not require fixing," he spoke sagely with an audible and knowing smile. His Sensei must have known how his other brothers would react to having the city streets open to themselves, and how it would cause him to not want the darkness to end. It would also explain why he had dared to venture above ground, something he only did when, very occasionally, meeting with his one human friend, a blind man about his own age.
"Why do you not play as well?"
"I -- "
"Even a wise man who lives near a forest does not waste firewood."
It did not require much coaxing for Donnie to join his brothers.
