Title: A Moment's Peace
Fandom: The Magnificent Seven
Characters/Pairings: Ezra, Nettie, brief mention of JD/Casey, Ensemble
Word Count: 500
Rating: PG/K+
Summary: Ezra would enjoy it for however long it lasted.

The morning sun had come out with a vengeance. Ezra stood for a moment and stretched leisurely before disrobing. He draped his red jacket over the little rickety chair in which he'd been sitting. It was not the most comfortable piece of furniture he'd ever used, by far, but the location could not possibly have been better. The junction between Nettie's and Chris' places was coming right along, and so, too, was Spring. The grass was green and lush. Bird songs filled the air, and the creek bubbled nearby.

There were occasional shouts that punctuated the peace, but even they seemed peaceful this day. Ezra smiled, the morning sunshine reflecting off of his gold tooth, as he undid his cufflinks and pushed his puffy, white sleeves up his arms. Perhaps he should not have worn one of his best outfits, but he hardly cared. He retook his seat, leaned back, and watched Buck teasing JD over Casey while Nettie looked on with a grin and a sparkle in her eyes. Vin was surveying the interaction, as well, from where he stood near the fence the others were working on patching.

"Ya could join us, Ezra," Vin called.

"Another pair of hands always lightens the load," Josiah agreed, pausing to wipe his hands against each other before taking hold of another board.

Grinning, Ezra lifted his flask to them. "I am perfectly fine here, watching you gentlemen labor in this sweltering heat."

"This ain't hot!" Nathan complained, and even his voice added to Ezra's grin and joy. "You wait 'til Summer! Then you'll see how hot it gets out here!"

Ezra sighed, but it was a sigh of peace, patience, and joy. He had never felt so completely at ease. For just a moment, he thought of his dear mother and all the cons she'd always had him running throughout every Spring, Summer, and every other season imaginable as well. She would never understand this moment, never understand what he liked about these people or this area, but that was for the better. Ezra's grin flashed brighter than the sunlight. If his mother did not understand, if she did not come around, then she could not possibly ruin this situation for him, or rush it to ruination. Ezra still feared that his budding friendships would not last, and perhaps he should lend a pair of hands if he was that concerned, but he would enjoy every moment he had.

"Ezra," Nettie called, "if you're not going to help them, you could help me. There's a lot of peas to be shelled for these old, tender hands."

Ezra paused. JD was called away to help the others, and he and Buck left, leaving Ezra alone with the old woman and young girl. Nettie might be the age of his mother, but she was nothing like her. "What do you say? You can regale me some more with tales of steam boats and plantations."

"Ah would be delighted." Casey brought him a bowl.
