Summary: The whole world's tired, but she can save a small piece at least.
It's such a small, little thing, just a sprig of green, but for so many the world over, it can mean the difference between life and death. The farmer turns the small plant over in her hand, surveying it carefully, taking the leaves that are ready but leaving others, both that are ready but that are also healthy enough to grant more life. What she does is only a little bit, but if she was caught, they would jail her away forever.
It's just like mankind, she thinks as she pats fresh fertilizer in around the plant's base and stands. She scans the field of corn, making certain that no passers-by have grown too curious as to what she's doing way out here alone in the field. It will never do for others to start asking questions. She does what she can for the cause, does what she can for her own family, for her grandmother who can no longer walk because of cancer, for her mother who has given up all hope because her father is gone, and for her own husband who has to have this miracle herb just to get out of the bed most mornings.
Her own body aches. Her own heart is tired, her soul having been defeated long ago. But she does what she must for the family, for the farm, for the few people in this terrible world who still matter to her. Patting the marijuana down, making certain it is secure, she turns and begins the long and lonely trek home. When she gets home, they'll all start to bombard her with questions. Some days she thinks they may love the plant more than they do her, but they're tired too, she knows. The whole world is tired and sick, including her.
