Sleepy Kurdy was lying on his bed, trying to ignore Smith, who was rummaging around in his backpack. "Look what I found today in the ruins of an abandoned house. "

Growling, the big guy turned his head, well knowing that the little guy wouldn't give up before he did so. His eyes fall onto an old book with a green-yellow cover. Mark Twain, Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He breathed in sharply. So familiar that it almost hurt.

"There is even an inscription. For Kurdy, in Love, Mom and Dad. "

In a flash, he was fully awake. "This... this cannot be, "he croaked. "We never lived in Greenville. "But nevertheless, with shaking hands, he grabbed for the book, his fingers wandering over the faded sides while his eyes were resting on the handwritten words. Memories were crossing his mind.

He had been five years old. Couldn't even read, but when he had seen this book in the window of the old bookshop down the street, he had been blown away. There was never enough money, barely enough for daily life, but one day he found a wrapped gift on his bed. Mark Twain, Adventures of Tom Sawyer. With an inscription. For Kurdy, in Love, Mom and Dad.

Fifteen years. Only some weeks before the Big Death had turned his life around. The lives of all children and teenagers. It had been all about surviving the next day. He had never thought about this book again. Until... now...

Tears were burning in his eyes. "This cannot be, "he whispered again. But his fingers were still clasping the book, not willing ever to let it go again.

Silently Smith turned around to leave the room. It was a pain to be God's messenger, but sometimes something good came out of it.
