Title: A Bird in the Bush
Fandom: Gemfire
Characters/Pairing: Gweyn & Erven, Erik, Zorax the Mighty
Wordcount: 400
Rating: G/gen
Tags: humour, plotting, drama, worldbuilding
Prompt: release
Summary: Gweyn defeats Erik but lets him go. She knows what she's doing.
"I'm surprised you released him without consequence," Lord Erven raised an eyebrow, "You do realise he still holds a grudge, yes? He quite rudely refused our offer to take him in three times. He will ally with one of our neighbours and continue to hound our borders."
Princess Gweyn shrugged, "We'll control those neighbouring provinces too, soon. He'll have nowhere left to run. This way, he'll join us eventually. He'd be a valuable asset, one I can't let just die somewhere outside Ishmeria where I can't keep track of him."
"You are confident in your conquest, Your Grace. King Eselred still owns half the map."
"Because he happened to have them already. I do not fear that incompetent petty tyrant," she shook her head, "And I can at least trust that the fool is not so far gone that he would ally with Lankshire over me."
"Prince Erik does, indeed, loathe King Eselred far more than he does ourselves," said Erven, "We at least have that common point to bond over."
"What else is necessary, in these times? I don't need him to like me. He's not even handsome. Now, if we're talking Lars, maybe, or Terian..."
"You are not the child you were at the start of this war," Erven frowned, "But you have not truly lost yourself. I feel like I've done my duty to your father."
"You are always indispensible," she smiled at him, "And I am grateful to your long years of service to the Tordin family."
"Zorax will be most displeased, however," Erven pointed out.
"He is always angry - I worry a lot more when he attempts to smile - and I believe he answered to me the last time I checked. Tell him he will simmer down or take a swim in the moat."
"If you don't mind, would it not be better from Your Grace in person? He's got that look in his eyes, and he's got an axe."
Princess Gweyn sighed. She was getting better at this but it was very difficult to argue with the man who practically raised you and the the 'advisor' who could probably scare the Fire Dragon, "Very well, I shall explain to him that we are conserving our military resources for another attack on our actual objective - King Eselred. Then I can send him up north, so I can think straight for five seconds."
