It wasn't that she didn't love him; harsh breath and stained teeth aside, he was kind, if quixotic. But she'd told him from the start, she belonged to the desert, and when the autumn rains arrived, an ancient memory pulled her back there and into her cast-off skin, and she slunk beneath the sand to slumber until the spring bloom, trading for this renewal all memory of him.
