Sam pulled his thick coat closer around his shoulders, but it didn't help much. The dump grey surrounding seemed to swallow up every light and warmth. Tired, he rested his head against the rock behind him and closed his eyes. Allowed himself to drift away for some moments.
Back to the Shire. Everything was bathed in bright light: green meadows and colorful flowers. Children were playing in the lake. Neighbors met outside on a bench to enjoy the last sunbeams of the day; chatting and smoking. Rosie, a bunch of flowers in her arms she had just picked up, smiling at him. The evening sun was sparkling in her hair.
„Sam?!“ Suddenly Frodo's voice reached his ear, tore him out of his dreams. Feeling guilty, Sam blushed slightly. „Master Frodo. Just give me a moment; I will light a fire and take care of your meal.“
„It's okay, Sam,“ the other hobbit reassured him. „What were you thinking about? You were smiling.“
„Summer at the Shire. Sunshine. Warmth. Friends. I wish we could be there right now.“
Looking sad, Frodo put his hand onto his shoulder. „I'm so sorry, Sam, that I dragged you into all this.“
