"I told them this wouldn't be ephemeral," Rich murmured, looking with pride at the beautiful woman on his arm.
Dana looked at Rich with raised eyebrows hidden behind her lacy veil. "What did you say?" she whispered, clutching both his arm and her bouquet a little harder.
He grinned. He'd been practicing for this day all year and for this very moment all day, since he'd gotten a peek at her Word of the Day calendar that morning. He was glad his fiance was not superstitious. He couldn't imagine not having been with her today, not having had her at his side on this, the most important and wonderful day of their lives.
"It means lasting for a short time only."
"Yes, it does!" She giggled, actually giggled, which made him grin even wider.
"See?" he asked, beaming brilliantly up at her. "I pay attention to everything in your life. Every small detail is important. Everything you do, everything you enjoy, is important to me, even if I don't always understand it."
"That, Mister Halke," she whispered, wishing she dared to raise her veil to kiss him now but not wanting to hear how aghast all their guests would be at such a break from tradition, "is an incredible turn on."
"Wait 'til tonight, Missus Halke." He squeezed her hand, wishing he could touch her elsewhere. "I'm going to turn you on more than you ever thought anybody could. But right now, we've got people watching, and I know how you feel about having sex in public places."
Dana blushed bright red underneath her white wedding veil. "Rich!"
His eyes danced; he laughed. He squeezed her hand and continued to lead their way down the aisle.
After a moment, she whispered, "Besides, you already turn me on more than I ever thought possible."
He couldn't have smiled wider without breaking his face. Everybody else had said this would be ephemeral. Even he had feared for a long time that it would. Dana could do way better than him, after all, but she didn't want better. Miracle of miracles, she wanted him! Miracle of miracles, she was choosing to become his bride on this day -- and to stay with him for the rest of their lives. God, he found himself praying as they reached the Preacher, thank you. Thank you for this miracle of miracles. Thank you for my wife and our love.
