“Psst, Lucca!”
“What is it?” asked Lucca, followed by a rather Ayla-like grunt of befuddlement. It was 3am and Marle was shaking her awake.
“I was just thinking - why do we call the year 1000 the ‘present’? I mean, it is for us, I guess,” she frowned and scratched her head, “But isn’t Ayla’s present or Robo’s. Plus, your machine says that in all the time we’ve been going back and forth in time, three weeks passed for us. So the present should shift by three weeks. Don’t you think?”
“Its just shorthand. The gate key only sends us to, like, ten places,” she groaned and rubbed her eyes, “And I invented it so I can call the settings on it whatever I want. Now please let me sleep.”
“But I’m worried now. How do we age? Do we age by three weeks, whichever time we’re in? If we, say, go to the year 1001 and stay there, will we skip out on the rest of the ageing? What happens with all the time we weren’t there – would our parents just think we disappeared?”
“I don’t want to think about it. I’m worried now. Please go back to sleep.”
