Title: The Burden of Excellence
"The future? You're too young to be expected to worry about it. Take a break, go have fun," instructed Fiore. The boy just blinked at her, his face solemn.
"That's precisely what I can't do, as a gifted signeturgist," replied Director Ceisus, "I have a duty to fulfil my entire potential. I'm aware that I'll need more than talent and hard work. Others at the same level of study will come along as gifted as me, and I still have little experience compared to many. My Directorship is not particularly secure, I fear. And besides," he frowned, "I worry that I am not doing enough practically to solve this world's many problems."
"You need to get out more, then. I'd invite you along with us but we're constantly in dangerous battles."
"I've no taste for battle and no intention of simply tagging along on the coat tails of others," he agreed, "This needs to be something unique to me."
"Don't refuse any help, though. I'd be dead without all my allies," she warned, "I know a lot of other academics are back-stabbing sycophants but you have genuine friends. You just need to learn how to tell the good ones apart."
