Rent day had come, bringing with it the usual anxieties.

"I wish Mister Babbitt wouldn't be so mean," Peter sighed. "We try to pay the rent on time."

"Don't seem to matter much to him," Mike responded with a shrug. "I guess some people are just born grouches.

"I don't mean to play the Devil's advocate, or anything; but maybe if we were really nice to him, he'd start being nice to us."

"You could be nice to him 'till the cows come home, but I don't think it'd make a difference."

"That doesn't mean it isn't worth a try," Peter pointed out. "And trying wouldn't hurt anything."

"I suppose not," Mike conceded. At the sound of a loud bang on the door, he motioned toward it. "Now's your chance to give it a shot."

Quickly, Peter threw the door open, pasting his sunniest smile on his face at the sight of the landlord. "Good morning, sir! How are you today?"

His friendly greeting was utterly ignored. Instead, Babbitt burst past him, the usual scowl on his face.

"Where's the rent this time," he demanded.

Peter let out another sigh, smiling a little. "At least I tried," he told himself.
