Leaving his bathroom, Francesco found Viola in the kitchen making herself some coffee. He raised an eyebrow. “Make yourself at home, why don’t you.”
She turned around, revealing a pajama set with a cartoon mouse printed across her chest. “I’m making coffee for you too.”
“I’d hope so,” he said. “Anyway, still with your ridiculous pajamas?”
She rolled her eyes. “So what? It’s adorable.”
“Viola… it’s unsettling. Those eyes are too big.”
She huffed. “Stop teasing me and open that package on the couch. It’s a present for you.”
Francesco picked it up, turning it over. “A present? Why?”
She flashed him a suspiciously bright smile. “Just because. Since I steal your coffee every morning.”
Francesco opened the package, warily, then stared at its content in horror. It was a pajama set with a cartoony cat print. It looked grumpy.
“You’re crazy. I’m never wearing this,” he declared.
“Are you sure?” she asked, her smile turning smug as she tapped a video on her phone—one that made Francesco go pale.
“What are you planning to do with that?” he asked, alarmed, staring at the video Viola had taken at Turi’s twin daughters’ birthday party, where he’d been dragged into an embarrassing karaoke session featuring cartoon theme songs.
“If you wear the pajamas I gave you, nothing,” Viola said sweetly. “If you refuse… it might accidentally reach your colleagues at the precinct.”
Francesco put his hands on his hips. “Viola, this is blackmail.”
She shrugged. “I know. Are you going to arrest me, inspector?”
Francesco stayed silent for several long, painful seconds. Then he grabbed the pajamas and disappeared into his bedroom.
When he returned, he looked just as grumpy as the cat printed across his chest. “There. I put on your stupid pajamas. Happy? Now delete that video.”
“Only if you agree to take a picture with our matching pajamas,” Viola said, stepping beside him with her phone ready.
“So you can blackmail me with that too?”
“No. I just want to immortalize my victory. Well? What do you say?”
Francesco posed for the photo, wearing the longest, most dramatic pout he could muster.
And while Viola laughed softly, Francesco admitted to himself that the pajamas actually fit him well and was annoyingly comfortable.
And that Viola’s gift pleased him far more than it should have.
And that if they now had matching pajamas… yes, he was absolutely doomed.
