Benton went inside his cabin and bent down in front of the fireplace. His knees protested but some things had to be done.
He lit a fire and warmed his stiff arthritic fingers by the flames. He stood up and sighed as he looked around his cabin. The cabin might look the same, but now that Ray was gone it felt lonely and empty. There was no music filling the air from Ray’s record player, there was no scent of the delicious meals that Ray had learned to make over the years; Benton was fond of Ray’s homemade pizza with venison and pineapple.
He was not feeling well and decided to rest, Ray had always said he worked too hard even after he retired from the RCMP and he thought that even though Ray was gone he would take his advice.
He sat down in his chair and closed his eyes and everything went dark and quiet.
‘Hey, Fraser. Time to wake up, buddy.’
Benton opened his eyes and gasped. Ray was standing in front of him and he looked the same as when they first met. His gray hair was now golden.
‘Ray?’ Benton asked. Ray had been gone for six months and three days and he hoped that this Ray wasn’t a dream or a figment of his imagination.
Ray grinned. ‘Yep, it’s me. Time to go,’ Ray said as he held out his hand.
Benton reached for his hand, the skin was warm and smooth and Ray pulled him to his feet.
‘Where are we going?’ Benton asked as he continued to hold Ray’s hand.
‘Home,’ Ray said as his eyes flicked behind Benton and Benton followed his gaze.
‘Oh dear,’ Benton said as he saw that he was still sitting in his chair.
‘Yeah. You… um… you died.’
‘Oh,’ he turned around and brushed his lips against Ray and the kiss was just as he remembered. Rays lips were warm and rough and his stubble tickled Benton’s cheek.
Benton broke the kiss and cupped Ray’s cheek. ‘Is Dief there too?’
‘Yep. He can’t wait to see ya again,’ Ray said with a grin. Hang on a sec,’ Ray said as he left the room and came back holding Turtlewalski.
Ray smiled and they walked into the closet and into The Borderlands.
They were going to spend multiple lifetimes together and Benton enjoyed every minute of it.
