The crime scene was still crawling with agents from the forensic department when Viola tried to convince an officer to let her slip under the yellow tape, flashing her Sicilia Web News badge.

Next to her, Tamara checked her watch, huffing with the weary air of someone who just wanted to get her footage and go home.

Drawn by the loud chattering, Francesco rolled his eyes and walked over with a sigh.

“Viola. You know you can’t be here.”

“Francesco. Good morning to you too,” she said, raising an eyebrow. “And for the record, it’s not like we’re here to snoop, you know? We’re working.”

“We’re working too, Viola. The forensic team is still collecting evidence.”

Viola stepped closer with a conspiratorial smile. “But if you let us through and escort us, then it’s not a problem, right?”

Francesco smiled back, leaning in and lowering his voice. “I have rules to follow, Viola. I can’t violate protocol just because you bat your eyelashes at me.”

“Really? Since when?” Tamara muttered, arms crossed, earning herself a glare from Francesco. “Look, Viola, I’ve got an idea. Instead of flirting with Inspector Demir, why don’t you get him to give us a statement? At least we won’t go back to the newsroom empty-handed.”

“Tamara! What are you talking about? I wasn’t flirting,” Viola protested. “And anyway, instead of talking nonsense, why don’t you prep the camera for Francesco’s statement?”

“I’m afraid I can’t give any statements until all evidence has been gathered,” Francesco said, amused.

“You’re joking, right?” Viola asked.

He shook his head. “Afraid not. Come back in about twenty minutes and I’ll see what I can say to help you with your article, okay?”

With an exasperated huff, Viola watched him walk back to his team. “Unbelievable. He kicked us out!”
