Buffy and Spike sat cross-legged on the living room floor, their niece Joyce was looking at them, her big eyes wide with curiosity as they told her a kid-friendly tale of how they went from enemies to reluctant allies.
Buffy’s lips curled into a fond smile when she recalled, “You know, when your uncle Spike first showed up in Sunnydale, he was really annoying. He wanted to be a big bad, but all he did was stir up a lot of trouble and give me major headaches.”
Spike glared at her. “Excuse me? I was a big bad back then.”
Buffy shrugged, smirking. “Really? I never felt truly threatened by you and your half-baked evil plans. Just mildly inconvenienced.”
“Inconv—how dare you?” he exclaimed, outraged.
Joyce giggled, amused by their exchange, and Buffy winked at her. “You know? Your grandma Joyce made him flee with his tail between his legs once. He lost many big-bad points that night.”
Spike huffed, crossing his arms. “Yeah, well. That’s unfair. She caught me unprepared.”
Buffy leaned closer to him, continuing, “Believe it or not, that night marked the start of a tale for the ages. Eventually I grew very fond of Mr. Here-Comes-Trouble.”
Spike’s eyes softened. “I am known to be an acquired taste.”
Buffy reached out, squeezing his hand gently. “And quite relentless in your pursuit.”
“Eww!” protested Joyce.
They both turned a puzzled look to their niece. “What?” asked Spike.
“You have smoochy faces. No smooches!” she admonished, pointing her finger at them.
“Right, sorry…” said Buffy. “Where were we?”
“Long story short,” started Spike, “we didn’t trust each other at first—of course. But we were forced to make a truce, and that was one of many turning points.”
Buffy beamed. “Yep. It was a heck of a roller-coaster from there.”
