“Bugger that.”
Spike’s voice was mixed with the group’s singing, but it caught Buffy’s attention anyway.
She watched him leave, coat swirling like a curtain, while everyone else kept performing for an invisible audience. Sweet’s spell had been broken with his departure, but somehow it was still lingering.
Buffy stopped singing too and stepped back. Once, twice. Nobody seemed to notice; they kept pouring their hearts out, fears and doubts laid bare, as if Sweet had sprinkled a little more of his magic all over them when he’d vanished, sending colorful sparkles in the air.
Then, she followed Spike outside.
He was already halfway down the alley when she called after him, and he turned around telling her to go back inside and finish the “big group sing.”
She didn’t want to.
The song she’d been forced to sing had stripped her soul bare without her consent, unearthing all of her sorrow, her numbness, her ache.
Spike was no good for her, but he’d known everything from the start, she wouldn’t have to explain. Cold comfort at the ready.
She stepped closer. One step. Then another.
Buffy burst into song. Spike followed suit.
Their lips met, yearning, sealing their fate.
