Title: Queen C's First Day
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Characters/Pairings: pre-Xander/Cordelia, also mildly hints at Jesse/Cordelia and Xander/Willow
Word Count: 500
Rating: G/K
Summary: It all starts with the first day.

She shouldn't care. Other children, both boys and girls, were gathering close around her, all eager to try the multitude of brand-new crayons and sharpeners her parents had gifted her with on this, her first day of school. She didn't just have crayons either. She had coloring pencils, markers, stencils, everything they had thought might gift her with an upper hand in coloring. She'd also been gifted with the ability to choose a few select classmates, with her mother, of course, having instructed her as to whom at least three of those classmates should be, daughters of her own friends.

She shouldn't care that there were two kids in the class still in a corner doodling by themselves. The ugly, little redhead had more troubles than Cordelia would ever have to suffer, clearly, judging from her Sears wardrobe alone. The girl didn't really bother her. It was the boy who kept drawing Cordelia's attention away from the other kids clustering around her. She'd seen him smile at the redhead, and he'd snapped at her when she'd broken her silly, little crayon. No one had the right to talk to Cordelia Chase in such a manner! And he was cute to boot!

"Humph," she murmured underneath her breath, blowing at her bangs.

"Cordy, aren't you going to color with us?"

She drew her gaze away from the boy who had spoken to her. She thought she'd heard his name mentioned as being Jesse, but she didn't care. He was poor. He wasn't the type for whom she was searching for her first boy with whom to connect. She picked them out easily, as she'd met them before in other social activities. She heard her mother's voice in her head and almost nodded. She'd make her mother proud. She'd pick the right boy and get her future set, and that boy certainly wasn't Xander whatever-his-poor-name-was.

"I don't color," she announced with pride, tossing her dark mane, which she knew was pretty, over her slender shoulder. "I create."

"Ooo! That sounds like fun!"

She looked at the wide-grinning blonde, recognizing her as the Kendall girl. "You can help, and you, and you, and you." She picked out only the best of the kids, those she recognized as having parents who had money and fame. Today was the first day of the rest of her life, and Xander and Rosenberg would regret mouthing off at her.

She heard laughter and found her eyes betraying her, stealing back to them practically cuddling in the corner. "Hmph." She lifted her head higher. They would regret it one day, when she ruled this school like her mother had before her.

"What about me?"

She zeroed in on the loud-mouthed, eager boy in poor clothes. "You? Why would I want you to help? Go color with the freaks." She pointed to Xander and Rosenberg, ignoring the way his face fell. She knew his parents; he was useless to her.

"Freaks." Harmony grinned. "I like that word."
