Coming home from college, Buffy found Joyce and Dawn in the kitchen, unpacking groceries after a trip to the supermarket.
Joyce greeted her with a smile. “Hey, Buffy.”
“Mom. Dawn,” she said, smiling back. “Wow, you guys got a boatload of oranges and lemons. Were they on sale or are we having a special citrus salad week?”
Dawn rolled her eyes. “Janice’s mom is having a garage sale, and I’m helping her with the lemonade stand.”
“And I’m supposed to help the girls make lemonade,” said Joyce, “but I’m getting an awful headache. Could you fill in for me, Buffy?”
“Oh… actually I—I’ve got stuff to do. An essay.”
Joyce gave her a look. “And you really can’t spare a few hours to help your sister out?”
“We don’t need a chaperone,” said Dawn. “Janice’s mom will be there all the time, I promise. Besides, Buffy is the last person on earth that should be put in charge of a lemonade stand.”
Buffy crossed her arms. “Excuse me?”
“Remember when you forgot to add sugar to the lemonade punch you made for parent-teacher night?”
“Well, Buffy, can you at least take her? I really need to lie down.”
“Sure, mom.”
