Alex watched her husband brood over his third cup of strong-brewed coffee already that Christmas morn. The last few weeks had been full of the latest crime wave to hit Texas, but she had managed to make sure that everything on the list she knew her husband secretly held in his heart had been marked off. The presents were wrapped and ready, nestled underneath the tree since the night before, and four of their lifelong friends, their daughter, and her latest boyfriend had already gathered into the living room. She'd made CD's old recipe for Christmas cookies, having finally grown accustomed to being able to cook after finding his stash of recipes after his death.

It was no wonder, she thought, thinking of CD, why her beloved couldn't get in the spirit. They weren't as young as they had been once upon a time, and the last few weeks had taken its toll both on his body and his heart. No matter how hard he strived, he could never save every single person, and she knew the losses had always weighed down on him. She walked up and wrapped her arms around him from behind, dangling a gingerbread cookie right before his handsome, bearded mouth. She knew they were in trouble when he immediately bit the head off.

"Come on, darling," she crooned in his ear, but then she heard the sound she'd been waiting for for hours. She smiled and kissed his temple. "Sounds like somebody just arrived."

"Who else did you invite?"

Her grin grew wider. "Who do you think I invited?"

He frowned; her smile grew even more in silent response. He was up and out of his seat in a flash, all but running to the door. She followed, and warmth spread through her when she saw the far newer, white RAM truck parked next to his Walker's older, black one that was beginning to show a good bit of wear, tear, and rust.

"TRIVETTE!"

Walker bounded out the door with more energy than he had displayed at home in over a week, ever since Trivette had said he might end up missing this Christmas. He'd thought perhaps his best friend had moved on without him, until Alex had confessed to him just how important his visit was. She watched the men embrace and heard their warm chatter.

"Uncle Trivette made it?" she heard her daughter ask from behind her.

Alex nodded.

"Now the party can begin!" exclaimed Gage as he bounded out the door, too, to join the other two.

Sydney came to a stop beside Alex. "Men," she remarked, shaking her head, "they never really do grow up, do they?"

"We all need our friends."

"Our family," Walker corrected gently as Alex nodded. He hugged his wife again, leading the way back in, then plucked the rest of the gingerbread cookie from her fingers and ate it. They were complete at last, and it was going to be a merry Christmas after all.

The End
