Title: For Short or For Forever
Fandom: Labyrinth
Characters/Pairings: Jareth/Sarah
Word Count: 500
Rating: G/K
Summary: Sarah learns something unsettling.

Sarah stared at the skull. She had never seen anything quite like it. Indeed, if it had not been for the unusual beak structure, she likely would not have recognized the species to which it belonged at all. She might have thought it some odd bird or perhaps even a creature she had never encountered previously. As it was, she puzzled aloud, "Is that a... Fiery skull?"

"It is." Jareth seemed as cool and collected as always.

Sarah could not help quizzically examining the bone structure. Her fingers reached out, but she stilled herself at the Goblin King's glance. She could practically hear him saying, in that same superior tone he had used so often when she had first defeated his Labyrinth, I would not touch that if I were you. She dropped her hand quickly to her side and ignored the heat that rose in her cheeks. "I... I did not know they could die," she admitted in an awed whisper, still gazing at the skull.

"We all die, Sarah," he said as though he were discussing a common, ordinary fact.

Her widened eyes slowly lifted to his handsome face. Her heart skipped a beat. It was the first time since she had managed to fight her way back to him that she felt a chill of fear and foreboding in his presence.

"Eventually."

She could not be certain if he added that final word to end her curiosity over the Fieries, or if he was, as she feared, referring to himself. She felt herself gulp. She could ask, -- but she realized she dared not. She had always thought of her beloved as being Immortal. After all, other than the one time when she had defeated him to save Toby, he had never seemed to age a day. If anything, there were days when he looked younger than she.

Slowly, she forced down the lump that had formed in her throat. Jareth had looked away, scanning their surroundings. She could not be certain what he was searching for, if indeed his roaming gaze was not simply meant to be a distraction. Again, she thought of asking him, but she could not bring herself to voice the question that now burned within her.

"Even I," he whispered as though he had read her mind now. "Come now, though," he spoke a moment later, in a louder, briskier, and much more cheerful tone. "This is not a place fit for a young Queen, and we've much plan for our wedding."

She stared up into his beautiful eyes as his hand lingered outstretched to her, fingers raised. At length, deciding she did not want to know, she slid her hand into his. His warm fingers enveloped hers. He transported them away. Whatever their future held, she knew one thing for certain. However long he might have, however long she might have for she still believed her life would prove shorter, she wanted to spend every moment she could with him.
