"Come inside and have a nice cup of tea."

That was her cue. The mistress of the small abode quickly slid closer to the tiny fireplace and made sure the kettle was on. She didn't know why she bothered honestly, because the girls never entered. She wanted her husband to be pleased, however, so she made sure the tea was just right and the snacks were prepared. She doubted human girls ate grains, but it was all they had and she was not about to take a life to be able to provide something which these spoiled children might actually approve. They could eat it or do without, she thought, her tiny, purple tail twitching behind her.

She heard her husband sigh as he slithered back into their home. "No good," he said, sniffing disdainfully. "They'll never learn. They could be quite at peace here with you and me, but oh, no, they just have to find that castle!" Her poor mate shivered visibly at the thought, reminding her she was very glad she did not have to deal with that cantankerous King or anyone else other than her Wyrm.

"I don't know why you bother, dear," she chided gently. She paused to carefully pour him a sip of tea and nudged it to him along with a leaf filled with grains. They had far more than enough here to last their entire lifetimes, but it was never enough for those girls.

He sighed. "I just keep wishing one of them would come to their senses before it's too late."

"It's not our battle, dearest," she reminded him.

"No," he admitted, sipping at the mint juliper tea, "but a bloke can try, can't he? Children never listen."

"Ours didn't."

"True, true. Besides, is it my fault I want to show my wife off? Not a one of them will enter, but I've got the most beautiful and kindest missus they'd ever set eyes on!"

She blushed, her entire, tiny body turning a darker shade. "You honor me, kind sir." She rose up, showing him her underbelly and wiggling provocatively.

"You honor me," he returned humbly, "to be your mister, to share this life with you."

"Oh, please do share it with me and don't go back outside into that dreadful maze tonight, dearest."

"I'll do as you wish, dear one, but I can scarcely be blamed for wanting to show off my wife, whose beauty makes even the decay in this home look as radiant as the sun."

"It is radiant," she cooed, sliding against him, "because it's ours."

She had a point, he knew, but he also knew he had a job to do. The King would come calling tomorrow, if not sooner, and he'd have to report that he had made certain to send the girl the wrong way. But that was a matter for then. For now, it was just he and his missus, and he was completely content to curl around her and bask at home.
