Title: Of Kings and Labyrinths
Fandom: Labyrinth
Characters/Pairings: Hoggle, also mentions Jareth/+Sarah
Word Count: 500
Rating: G/K
Summary: Hoggle reflects in a quiet moment before the next journey begins.

None of them knew what they were about. They all entered the Labyrinth with the same fresh face, high hopes, and sickeningly cheerful demeanors. They all, also, failed. Even the one who had come so close to defeating the King had eventually failed. She'd earned her baby brother back, yes, but her life had never been the same. No one ever forgot the Labyrinth, or its Master, and the Labyrinth never forgot anyone who entered its maze.

Hoggle knew more than most that the King had also never forgotten the dark-haired beauty who had somehow managed to weave her spell over all of them. He always had a role to play, of course, in every abduction. A few got the peach, several managed to reach the oubliette, but none had gotten as far as Sarah. No others had escaped with their brothers, or their own children. Hoggle felt especially bad for those children whose mothers cared so little for them that they offered them up to the King for anything from riches to eternal youth to a sinful, but passing, good time.

Some women had never cared for their children, Hoggle thought, but Sarah had not been one of those. He wondered if she had ever given birth to children her own and realized, looking back, that she had had a maternal care about her even at the tender age of fifteen, young, and mortal years. There was no wonder he and the others had fallen underneath her trickery. After all, none of them had ever been cared for before.

But to thnk that she had convinced them to revolt -- "Bah," he muttered, aiming his gun and shooting down another tiny Fairy. These creatures were not the same as the Fairies who attended court with the King, nor did that realm of Fairies care for these cursed and wretched creatures. He remembered back to Sarah's instant concern for the Fairy he'd shot in front of her. The girl had come so close to joining them, but in the end, she had not.

He wondered where she was now as he made his way around his daily route, shooting down all who did not belong. He knew she thought of them, of the King especially. She might have forgotten him -- after all, he was ugly and short, cut down a meager runt from his once renowned height, but that was what happened to old Kings when they were replaced. It was the way of the labyrinth, and the way of the world. It was the way of life itself, no matter the species or age of mortality. One day, Jareth himself would also be passed on, and the name, title, and power would go to another.

Such was the way of things. But for now, another baby was crying somewhere. Goblins were scurrying. The Labyrinth's vines were growing, hungry for more living beings to enter its realm. Hoggle raised his gun, checked his jewels, and readied again to resume his role.
