301: Sell - The Magnificent Seven - JD/Casey - None Better

Title: None Better
Fandom: The Magnificent Seven
Characters/Pairings: JD/Casey, Ensemble
Word Count: 500
Rating: G/K
Summary: Her aunt had been right: There was no better place to raise a family, and no better people with whom to do so.

She won't sell it. Even now, with all her blood family in the ground, she won't sell their little parcel of land. She'd doubted her aunt when she'd refused to sell all those years ago. Her refusal to sell, though, had not only been a constant inspiration for Casey throughout her formative years, but it had led them, both of them, to the best friends they'd ever known, to a new family who mostly still called the place home. Chris and Vin had their own ranch, of course, and Ezra his saloon, but honestly, they all spent more time on her family's old homestead than anywhere else now that they were retired.

Casey chewed at her bottom lip as she stared into the setting sun. It was sinking lower, and soon it would be dark. Normally, she didn't worry when the guys were out, but her eldest son was such a hothead, having taken after his uncle Buck more than his father or herself. "Momma," Little Nettie asked, tugging on her hand, "do you think they'll make it home in time for supper?"

Casey closed her eyes and tried to regain her composure. Dear Lord, the sweet naivety of the child! Rather or not the boys made it back home in time for supper was far from her mind, even though she had the kettle boiling inside for the kids. They would make it home, she knew that. They would eat, she knew that as well. But what of her little Johnny, who was so intent on filling his father's and uncles' boots? What if he'd already --

She let out a whoop of excitement as she saw riders coming at long last. "Stay here with your brothers," she told Nettie and Mary both, who had flanked either side of her skirts. She rushed off of the porch and ran pass the first few galloping horses until she reached her husband's and son's. Then she swept her hat, which was one of Bucklin's older hats, and proceeded to beat at her son's legs with it. "John Dunne the Fourth, what on Earth were you thinkin' scarin' me half to death like that?!"

"WHOA! WHOA!" Father and son brought their horses up short. JD tossed his kid his reins and slipped from his saddle as his son tried to argue, "Momma, I had to -- "

"I told you bein' Sheriff isn't all it's cracked up to be! You could've been -- "

JD forcefully took Casey into his arms. "We saved her," he told her, determinedly cutting into her tirade. "We saved the girl."

"But Johnny could've been -- " She suddenly realized tears of relief were streaming down her cheeks.

JD held her tenderly as the others gathered round. It was Josiah's deep, rumbling voice that actually broke through to her, but Casey all but pulled her son off his horse as she checked him over for injuries. She hated, sometimes, that he had such enormous role models, but truthfully, there could be no better men.

The End
