278: Shelter - OUAT - RumBelle - Never Again Alone

Title: Never Again Alone
Fandom: Once Upon A Time
Characters/Pairings: RumBelle (Rumpelstiltskin/Belle)
Word Count: 500
Rating: PG/K+
Summary: Now that she's got him back, she's not letting go again.

Most people think she's lost her mind, or at least lost her way, but nothing could be further from the truth. Belle found herself years ago. She'd always known she was meant for more than palace life, which, another thing that would shock the world at large, was far more boring and trivial than being even a scullery maid scrubbing a dark, huge, and foreboding castle, especially when that castle happened to belong to the most intriguing man she's ever met. He's also the most powerful, but that's never mattered to her. She's never looked to Rumpelstiltskin for his power but has always been intrigued, even from their very first meeting, by the man far beneath the beast.

He'd thought, way back then, that he'd had his true self securely buried from the rest of the world, hidden underneath so many tough layers and so much pain that no one would ever find him. Yet she'd known he existed somewhere within those layers from their very first meeting. She hadn't been fooled from the start. He had not wanted her simply to clean his castle or hurt her father. He had wanted her so he would no longer be alone.

And he wasn't. Neither of them were. Even in a castle full of people, a plethora of servants dedicated to awaiting her every need, Belle had already felt alone. She had always been alone, because nobody had ever understood her. Nobody had ever wanted to. No one had ever wanted to get to know the real, strange girl behind all the books and thoughts that no proper lady ever entertained. He had known she was different from the very first, but had never thought that she would care to understand him or search him out in any way.

Neither of them, even when they had started to truly warm to each other, had ever even considered the possibility that they might fall in love, but they had. He had wanted to not be alone, and she had prayed that God would send her a man to truly understand her, not just another boring Prince, someone who wouldn't insist that her place was on a pedestal, a throne, or otherwise safely tucked away from Ogres and other monsters. She was no equal to Rumpelstiltskin -- they both knew that, and she would never expect him to truly treat her as one. After all, he faced threats who could wipe away her entire existence with a single word.

Yet she'd never quite been all that afraid of him. What she had feared, after she'd found shelter and love in his arms, was losing him. But now, at long last, she is back with him. She's back with him, and she knows she cannot allow him to exact not his but their revenge on Regina for all she has done, for all the years she has cost them. She might never get him back if he does. She holds him even tighter.

The End
