Characters/Pairings: RumBelle (Rumpelstiltskin/Belle)
Word Count: 400

Summary: She is a wonder to him.

He wasn't supposed to be able to get sick. He wasn't supposed to be able to be hurt, to feel this frail ever again. He coughed as the lovely, little assistant he'd conquered months ago laid a cloth gently across his forehead. "The Queen," he fumed. "She must have -- " More coughing interrupted his declaration.

Belle smiled down at him, genuinely smiled. What was wrong with this girl? She was so beautiful, which wasn't a bad thing, but also so kind, which was something to which he'd never been accustomed, not before or after embracing the "curse" of the Dark One. "Or perhaps you just spent too much time out in that rain the other night." She pressed a second cloth to each cheek in turn, seeming not to care how ugly he was or how tough his crocodile-like skin.

He caught her wrist as she went to move away. "Why," he demanded, eyeing her, "are you doing this?"

"Caring for you? Isn't it my job?"

"I have not commanded -- "

"Look at it this way," she said, wringing the cloth out into one bowl, ducking it into another, and then pressing once more to his fevered face. "You have a... grand assortment of characters that traverse through this castle at the most unlikely of times. I certainly do not wish to be caught alone with any of them."

Anger suddenly flared in his eyes. For the first time since he'd fallen sick, Belle flinched and started to pull away. He caught her wrist again, however, and kept her still with a gentle pressure. His eyes met hers. "No matter how much they may fell me," he vowed, "none of them will ever lay a finger on you."

"That's why I'm here, why I stay." Her eyes met his evenly. "I know I'm safe with you, Rumpelstiltskin."

He closed his eyes and let his hand drop to his side. The fever must be worse than he'd originally thought, because no one felt safe with him. Even his own son had feared him. He almost jumped when he suddenly felt the cool press of the cloth on his cheek, and her fingers pressing gently over his heart, as if to check for the rhythm of his heartbeat. "I'm not going to die that easily, dearie!" he snapped, his eyes flying back open.

Shocking him, she smiled down at him. "I trust in that."
