Summary: Jubilee realizes she's no longer meant to be the last X-Man.

This wasn't supposed to happen. She was supposed to be the last X-Man. She was supposed to see the team through to her end, her team, her family. She was only supposed to breathe her last breath when everybody else was gone and buried. She wasn't supposed to have to leave somebody behind. She especially wasn't supposed to have to leave him behind, not when she'd been protecting him practically his entire life.

She was the last of the old ones left. At least, she hadn't gone out through a stake in the heart. They'd found a cure for her Vampirism years ago. It had only been after she'd enjoyed walking in the sunshine again and eating pizza, nacho chili cheese fries, and everything else that was so bad for her and utterly yummy that it had dawned on her, late one night when she'd watched the sun come up for the first time in a long time, that no longer being a Vampire also meant that she was no longer Immortal. But at least that meant, too, that they still had these last, few, precious moments together.

"Hahaoya!" She could feel his tears wetting her hand and her old, tattered, yellow jacket. "Take this off of me when I'm gone," she said. "Do it before my body goes stiff."

"Mama!"

"No, Shogo, listen to me. There are..." She struggled for breath. "...things in these pockets that will serve you well, as they have me." She thought of the knife from her old Wolveroonie, the closest thing she'd ever really had of a dad, the lighter from LeBeau, the teeniest knife she'd ever seen for picking locks from Ororo, the pipe that Emma had passed her that had once belonged to Sean, and even the simple pen from the Professor. There were pictures too and keys. "Don't let anybody go into my room until you've gone through anything. No matter what it takes. U-Understand?"

"You'll see why... when you start going... through my stuff. Come closer... so I can see you one more time?"

"Momma, we have healers -- "

"They're not going to make it in time, son. Don't resurrect me. Let me... go home... be with the others..." She had kept their history, kept their legends alive. Now it was his turn. Mutant or not, he was as much of an X-Man as anyone. She pushed through with one last attempt and pushed her memories into his mind, as many as she could without risking overloading him and one last thought: You are an X-Man, my child. Forever and always, you are an X-Man. You are the last X-Man now. I'm proud of you, Shogo. I love you.

She caught a glimpse of his face through the blood, realized again that she had raised a strong and healthy boy of whom she'd always be proud, and let him go with one final kiss to his hands that clenched hers. His shout of denial echoed through her ears.
