Banana Pudding (499 words) by look_turtles
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: due South
Rating: General Audiences

Characters: Benton Fraser, Ray Kowalski, Barbara Kowalski
Summary:
Fraser had always heard that the way to a man’s heart was through his stomach. Frannie must prescribe to that theory as well; she had was always made dinners for him. He had often wished she would stop with her one sided infatuation, if only so she would be happier and it seemed that all of her attention was now on Turnbull; he had gained at least thirty pounds thanks to Frannie’s cooking.
Food was certainly the way to Dief’s heart. As much as he didn’t want Dief to eat doughnuts, he had to admit that it was charming when Ray would share his doughnuts with Dief and Dief would lick the doughnut jelly from Ray’s face.
Mrs. Vecchio seemed to believe that food was love. He enjoyed the family dinners she hosted every Sunday if only because he was around the loud Vecchio family. He often wondered if Ray Vecchio missed that while he was in Los Vegas. Perhaps Mrs. Vecchio would make a special dinner for Ray when he came back.
He was now at a different kind of family dinner. He was sitting on a hard plastic chair in front of a green folding card table inside Mr. and Mrs. Kowalski’s trailer. There was very little space and he and Ray were so close that they bumped elbows often.
While Mrs Vecchio tended to cook Italian fare, Mrs. Kowalski seemed to prefer all different kinds of food. There was a plate of grilled chicken next to corn of the cob that was glossy with butter. There was a plate of wonderful smelling spring rolls filled with brightly color vegetables and an entire plate of biscuits piled high on top of each other that were gold brown and soft on the inside.
He had always had a healthy appetite (as his Grandmother would say) but his stomach was full and uncomfortable having eaten far too many biscuits.
‘Are you guys ready for dessert?’ Mrs. Kowalski asked as she cleared some space on the card table and sat down a large red plastic bowl that had whipped cream on the top.
‘You know it. You gonna try some on my mom’s banana pudding, Fraser?’ Ray asked as he scooped a large portion of yellow pudding into a bowl.
He was never one to turn down food, but considering that his stomach felt close to bursting he took a much smaller serving.
He took a bite and the pudding had an artificial taste but there seemed to be real banana slices in the pudding and the whipped cream was surprisingly not overly sweet.
‘Do you like it, Benton?’ Mrs. asked.
‘Oh yes. It is wonderful.’
She clapped her hands together and smiled. ‘Oh wonderful. I made the whipped cream myself even though Damian likes the stuff from the tub.’
As he ate more pudding he thought that Mrs. Kowalski didn’t need to feed him to get to his heart; like her son she was charming in her own way.
